I like the idea a lot, but not so much the design, it doesn't look that comfortable. But my biggest problem will be about functionality. What will happen with the "green water" after I filled the tank? I would need to flush the toilett if I need to wash my hands, even if I don't want to use the bathroom?

Another popular form of torture, termed as the head or limb crusher, consisted of pointed spikes of various sizes. The effect was so torturous that the victim could even hear his bones cracking. This form could be used with other tool like skin flayers, prods and pokers, breast-rippers, etc. to worsen the intensity of torture.

Post image for Revitalizing Efforts in the Enterprise Does Not Mean RIM is Abandoning the Consumer Market

After posting disastrous forth quarter 2012 results, RIM CEO, Thorsten Heins said that the company would be revitalizing their enterprise efforts…

Unfortunately, however, a number of news outlets took this to mean that RIM is abandoning the consumer market.  So many have mistakenly reported RIM's exodus from the consumer space that Patrick Spence, RIM's Managing Director of Global and Regional Marketing, posted the following statement on Twitter

We remain committed to all of our Customers (consumer & enterprise) and are enhancing our support/solutions for enterprise

Long story short…  RIM can't afford to remove any focus from the consumer space simply because the wall between the consumer and enterprise smartphone markets is being knocked down.

Many of the problems RIM is facing are because the company was too slow to react to the merging of the consumer and enterprise smartphone markets.

The only thing RIM should be doing when it comes to the consumer market is double down on it. If RIM can't succeed with consumers, revitalizing efforts in the enterprise won't matter much…

Finger frame camera will soon become reality, allowing you to simply form an L square with your hands and take pictures more easily and quickly while on the go. Researchers at Japan's Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences are working on a prototype of the said finger frame camera, which is known as Ubi-Camera.

The Ubi-camera fits over an index finger. On one side, there are camera sensor and lens and on the other is an IR range finder. Currently, the Ubi-camera is still far from any sort of commercial product, but the researchers have made some interesting progress.

The Ubi-camera is super handy and easy for you to take pictures, adjusting the focal point needs you to move your fingers away or towards your face: nearer to your face for wide-angle shots or further away for close-ups. And a press of a button takes the shot!

Currently, the prototype is still far from perfect such as the range finder is out of balance under certain lighting conditions and there is no zoom. A clip is included below giving you more ideas on how it works.

Windows 8 comes with Internet Explorer 10, if you have used Windows 8 Consumer Preview you already know that IE10 has two flavors, one desktop app and another Metro style app. Microsoft call it Metro style enabled desktop browser, although they run on a single rendering engine, they offer two different user experiences, one on the desktop and one on Metro.

When you click any link in the metro interface it opens Metro IE10 and if you click any link when on the desktop it opens desktop flavor of the browser. This is confusing and if you prefer only one flavor that is either desktop or Metro, you can change the default behavior of the browser.

Metro style IE10 is clean and simple but lacks several options which should be available like basic tasks like sharing web pages, printing etc., and also it won't support plugins like Flash player, this is not only annoying but irritates when you have to switch to desktop mode to open some sites.

Users can override this behavior using the Programs tab of the Internet Properties dialog, Microsoft writes in a blogpost. Change the options that suit your needs from this dialog box. The options are "Let Internet Explorer decide", this will open links depending on the environment you are in, if you are in Metro, then Metro IE will launch. Next option is "Always in Internet Explorer", this option will launch links in Metro. The third option is "Always in Internet Explorer on the desktop", this option will launch links in desktop browser.

For these settings to work IE10 should be the default browser in the system, if it is not then the options won't be accessible.

Another option is how the pinned site tiles on Metro will launch, there is a checkbox in the Programs tab of the Internet Properties dialog. if you check the option 'Open Internet Explorer tiles on the desktop' then these links will open on the desktop IE and if unchecked they will launch in Metro IE10.

If you think all this hassle is unnecessary wait for the Firefox for Metro and Chrome for Metro browsers to launch hopefully by the time Windows 8 Final launches.

It's perhaps a sign of the times that so much effort is being invested in finding the optimal way to carry things in your pockets. George Costanza-style wallets are definitely out of favour, although the alternatives are as numerous as they are disappointing. Perhaps something as minimal as the iPhone money clip pictured above could be worth a shot; you'd be able to carry a bit of plastic and a bit of paper and… what else do you really need? This particular clip does require a tiny bit of assembly time, although it's nothing you can't handle. You unscrew the iPhone's two bottom screws with the provided tool, place the clip and replace the screws with longer ones provided. It's so easy a caveman could do it.

And don't worry too much about demagnetizing; it's very unlikely the iPhone could affect your plastic in any way. You might however invest in a thin protector film for the back of the phone if you're concerned about scratches.

It's $33.

People know him as the man who has designed more than 3000 products, worked in 40 countries and winner of umpteen awards. Lucky Guy? NO! Karim Rashid does not believe in Luck; his mantra is perseverance, diligence and talent. Read on to know how this artistic industrial designer got fired from his job, reproached by his teachers and yet went on to become one of the most successful designers of our time. Proving to all that it only takes hard work, strong vision and a bit of business acumen to make it big.

Ever wonder how Karim manages to design in so many diverse design disciplines? He simply credits it to his decade of work experience in projects as diverse as x-ray equipments to power tools for Black & Decker to interior for a train.

Things have changed since I graduated. Back then, you would never think of going out own as a designer, it was more about finding a good place to work. In the last 30 years things have changed and there seems to be impatience in the youth culture where people feel the need to have success quickly. However, design is a socially responsible profession. You are there to make the world a better place. I think its better to think more objectively than subjectively. Think more extensively than intensively for what you can do…when I graduated I worked in Italy for a telephone company, then worked several years in a design consultancy in Canada. So basically I had 10 years of working experience under my belt and it added up to so much design experience.

All the diverse projects actually afforded me, that when I started my own in New York in 1993; I probably accelerated with success so quickly because I had so much of experience with working on diverse projects.

Karim feels young graduates should dedicate some of their time doing projects that are out of their direct field of passion. For example, if you want to become a furniture designer then work in some big corporation like IBM designing computers. Here you can understand so much about the culture of consumer goods. One can understand how corporations work and how marketing people are involved in a project. Moreover, one learns how to work with engineers, and gives you the knowledge of how to get a product from conception to the market.

Although he admires Dieter Rams a lot, Karim has his own mantra for pursuing a career in design. He is a more in-the-present moment kinda guy, using current trends, materials, circumstances and mindset while doing his work. But if you need his roadmap, then this is it:

  • Perseverance
  • Diligence
  • Talent

The story for perseverance is quite interesting. Many know that Karim was a DJ and owned thousands of records, but do you know he was fired from his job as a design professor? Apparently his school thought that he was teaching the students way too much theory and handed him the pink slip! Undeterred, he packed himself to New York with just $1500 in his pocket and slept on his brother's apartment floor for weeks before he could afford his own place. After living literally on a budget of a dollar-a-day for five years and striving hard to find clients and projects, Karim finally broke ground.

I had really great troubled to finding projects and clients and I persevered like crazy. I must have approached hundreds of companies in the US and I finally got my first job. I made sure that my one job was going to be the best work I do. It was very successful. It was for a company called Nambe in Santa Fe, New Mexico and they were producing tabletop products like bowls etc. out of cast aluminum, and they were selling to shops like Bloomingdales. I designed like 30-40 products for them. Several of them went into museum collections and are still in their product even 20-years later, they were so successful.

Although it was kinda my lucky break, I don't believe in luck. I had reached out to hundreds of companies; someone was bound to get back to me.

Karim advices that young designers need to push the boundaries when they embark on a project.

Diligence or hard work or to be focused is when you are working on a project, and you push the boundaries. Many a times students have an idea and they only just do till the beginning of an idea. They don't really push it to its limits and they don't take it as far as they can. When you start on a project you must jump in the deep end, dive in the deep end.

The third thing is talent. Talent is questionable. Is it a part of your genetic makeup or is it a part of your behavioral upbringing. It is because of the influence of your parents. So if you don't have talent in design you may as well try and do something else.

However this social act needs a business mind to make it a success. So I asked Karim upfront, how do designers ensure that they are not exploited or taken for a ride?

Straight up, never do a job for nothing! It is amazing that how many companies approach me and expect me to propose work for nothing. I not only refuse but about 10-years ago I remember I put my foot down and told no matter how famous a company is, if they want me to work for them, they must show me some advance on royalties or some money upfront. And for me that is trustworthiness. They are showing their commitment to me and I to them.

The thing with royalties is that you need to sell a good amount of the product to see some money in your bank. Another loop is that you may work on the product for two years or more and then suddenly the client may decide not to take the product to market or is not marketed well. It may not be exhibited well enough or the right distribution channels and sales force may be missing. At the end of it you have done all that work and you see nothing! Karim is in the process of writing a book called "Designer Dye" and it's a business book where a big part of it is talking to designers about the business of design.

No matter how young you are, how badly you need the project, if we collectively put our foot down then companies can stop exploiting designers. I probably started a trend because a lot of Italian furniture companies don't pay upfront and I basically talked them all into it and now it is benefitting other designers too. It's just that the companies have to get used to the idea.

I love Karim's analogy on this, "If I go to the doctor and he diagnoses me I can't say I will pay you only if I like your diagnosis. I have to pay the doctor regardless." Creative people get nervous about money issues, but they need to get paid.

Karim explains how royalties works, "when a company sells an object, and the royalty is say 3%, the minute they sell the product, that royalty should be put in a separate bank account and say every 6 months to a year be paid out to you. Royalties don't cost the company anything. Many times it happens that you don't get to see the royalty and the company is using your 3% to pay their bills. The reality is that royalty doesn't cost the company anything because they mark up the product. So there is no risk for a company. Period. When they pay you in advance its like them saying – trust that we are going to get the product to market."

As a parting shot, I asked Karim to recount any particular incident in his life that was pivotal and can empower us to keep up with perseverance. This is what he recounts….

When I was an undergraduate I had a professor who kept telling me that I would never be an industrial designer. What he actually meant was that I was too creatively different from my class, who would be following the same methodology and approach towards design. Even in my master's course in Italy, my professor there told me that I would never be an industrial designer, and I was hurt. It took me a long time to figure out that what they were really trying to tell me was that I had a mix of artist and designer in me and people who are more artist than industrial designers cannot tolerate compromise. Even the guy whom I sold my 22,000 records to said that with a name like Karim Rashid, I'd never make it as a designer!

What he learnt from these harsh deductions was to keep persevering and working with diligence. It motivated him to prove his detractors wrong and look at what this has brought him….name, fame and fortune!

The concept of a Digital Gaming Table has been around for a while, but its execution has not really taken off the way you would have liked. While we will not really ponder on the logistic problems what could be done to overcome them, technology like Microsoft's Surface seems to be perfect for this. Sure, it needs a few tweaks, but that should not be a problem at all. That apart, we get to our homemade Digital Gaming Table project and how one guy decided to make it from stuff lying around his home.

The iPhone has a 3.5-inch display which could be too small for some people. If you're one of those envious of Android users having larger screen, here is a quick fix for your iPhone – the MagniCase, an iPhone case with the capabilities to enlarge the display of the iPhone 4/4S by 1.5 times to 5.3 inch.

The MagniCase is simply equipped with a high quality Fresnel lens that enlarges the display. The lens can also double as a stand to keep your iPhone propped up, while it's not used for enlarging your videos, web contents or games.

Some more, the case also works like a regular protective case, protecting your iPhone from knocks, bumps and scratches. It's definitely an interesting idea but it's currently just at its fund-raising stage on Kickstarter.com.

So, if you've been longing for a larger display on your iPhone, then head over to Kickstarter to help them bring the MagniCase to reality. A clip is included below showing the MagniCase in action.

The SmartPet is being released by Bandai, the same company that made the Tamagotchi. So we know there's likely going to be an element of long term care and nurturing to this little creation. It uses your iPhone as its brain (and face) and the (free) associated application allows for a variety of interactions. It can make over 100 faces, and uses the front facing camera to try and recognize gestures. As it gets more emotionally attached to you it'll be able to learn more and more gestures. It can even interact, sing, and dance with other dogs through Bluetooth.

The application will be released March 31st, but you'll have to wait until April 24th, in Japan, to be able to buy one for $78. In the meantime you can entertain yourself sans dog, but retain some of the dignity you will inevitably lose if you're anywhere over the age of 12 and in possession of this somewhat creepy toy.

If you own more than one model of iPad or iPhone, you'll then need just the Billet dock, which bills itself as the easiest dock that fits all models of iPad or iPhone, with or without cases.

All the Billet dock depends is just a cam pad that spins giving a continuous range of support settings allowing the dock to suit different thickness of cases and different models of iPad. Switching from one to the other involves only rotating the cam support, which takes only seconds to do.

The Billet dock is machined from a single billet of aerospace grade Aluminum, and it has a built-in, special acoustic chamber to enhance the your device's audio quality.

The Billet dock is currently at its fund-raising stage at Kickstarter.com. If you think the Billet dock is revolutionary and you wish to be one of those making it a reality, then head over to Kickstarter.com to contribute yours.

Being in a long distance relationship sucks. If you download Pair, the application this article is about, it'll still suck. You'll just have a bit more fun while being miserable. Pair lets two people link up their phones and creates a private shared timeline. You're then free to do a variety of things that both of you can enjoy privately, like posting pictures and videos, sending messages, drawing things, etc. One of the better features is the ability to give each other a "thumb kiss": you place your thumb on screen and when both of you are in the same spot, the phone vibrates. You can also have joint "to-do" lists.

For couples that are in love, this can be a fun way to do what many are already doing very publicly on Facebook, at their friends' sometimes too silent dismay. It's a free download on the Apple app store, with an Android version in the works.

Ice creams, just by looking at them your mouth starts watering. No matter the weather, ice creams always taste 'the best'. The Avalanche research team has taken a stride to make the ice cream taste even more delicious just by changing its structure. The former studies by some scientists revealed that ice cream is as 'addictive as drugs'. Therefore, ice cream becomes a major item to be researched upon, and who better to research and make it yummier than the "Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research in Davos, Switzerland".

According to the research team, the structure of ice cream changes when it is stored in a domestic freezer. X-Rays have been used to reveal the formation of ice cream structure which changes at different temperatures also changing its taste. Nestle, worlds leading ice cream manufacturing company has expected to reveal the literal state at which the ice cream crystals merge and glow, expecting to change the tas te.

To carry out this study, the Avalanche Research team uses X-ray tomography machine which is one of the few machines that can image tiny structures at sub-zero temperatures. Dr Dubois, a food scientist at Nestle said that when the ice cream is produced it tastes better, than, when it is sold, transported and stored again. It all happens due to the variations in temperature, a white frost of ice crystals outline ice cream and changes the taste.

The study exposed some time-lapse images of the ice crystals which were taken on a variety of temperatures. It showed that when the water was iced up it changed the structure of ice cream and made the ice cream masticates. In short, the ice cream does not bear the same delicious taste, it is harder to bite, and is less satisfying.

Dr Dubois said that, they already know the factors which make ice cream crystals change the structure, but if they could recognize the exact method they would do something to slow the pro cess down.

The research by "Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research" has paved way for tastier ice cream. It is expected that the ice cream manufacturers adopt the study and process for making the item awesomely delicious. Rather preserve the taste, as of when the ice cream is manufactured.

The simple, yet striking Ariva furniture series is an example of neoplasticism in its purest form. Each piece avoids symmetry and attains aesthetic balance by the use of opposition. The designs play with the geometry of the straight line, square and rectangle combined with strong asymmetricality to skew the viewer's perception. From the side, each piece is slender and skeletal, but from the front appears thick and robust. In pure white, the series is as refined as it is peculiar.

Slingshots don't have to be all ghetto, made up of some discarded tree branch and rubber bands. There's a small industry built around them, and some are pretty hardcore. While it may not be the most accurate or even the most powerful on the market, the Montie Gear Y-Fork Slingshot looks like it means business. Cut from a "1/2inch thick aluminum plate with a waterjet at 50,000 psi for unrivaled strength and low weight," the hunting/target practice tool has a band made from Thera-Band Gold material (for a fast shot and long life) with a 16 pound pull weight at approximately a 28″ draw. The handle is wrapped in "550 test weight paracord for comfort. The paracord also provides a source of very strong cord (should you ever need it while in the field)." Clearly it's designed for the outdoorsy type in mind, but at $100, you'll have plenty of money left over to buy other outdoorsy gear as well. Due to recent spike in demand, there is a 3-4 week backorder.

Tinnitus may not be a severe problem as some other intense health condition, but it doesn't mean that it does not have a drastic impact on the lives of the affected. Sufferers hear a variety of noises ranging from ringing to swishing, and it originates from the ear or head. A newly created device similar to an iPod promises to relieve the patients of their affliction, say scientists.

The device works by playing a series of tones sounds tuned to the frequency of noises generated by tinnitus, inducing calm in the excessively active nerve cells within the hearing area of the brain. Long-term problems associated with the condition include sleep deprivation and inability to concentrate.

Professor Peter Tass, the chief German inventor, published evidence of the benefits of his Coordinated Reset (CR) device in the Restorative Neurology & Neuroscience journal. He supervised the trial wherein he detailed the condition's progress of 63 tinnitus sufferers, who wore the portable device for 12 weeks. The patients who used the device for up to six hours a day said they achieved better results. CR device did nothing to interfere with normal outside sounds so the patient could enjoy everyday routines. Treatment lasted for nine months. The positive effects continued for four weeks even after the patient ceased using the device and also during the follow-up treatment that lasted for ten months when it was depended on solely for maintenance therapy.

Professor Tass was optimistic about the results of his 'exploratory' study whose objective was to validate the effectiveness of the treatment in reducing the tinnitus symptoms. Researchers also explored the changes in the main affected areas of the brain and discovered confirmatory pattern changes that linked to improvements when patients used the device. The CR device is useful for patients with chronic tonal tinnitus, majority which is ringing in the ear s.

Required is a randomized-controlled trial by an independent research group that successfully evaluates the viability of this new invention. The phase two of the trial is scheduled for a later date.
