If you thought that Japan's innovations were limited to cool robotic toys and nanotechnology, then you could not be more wrong. Here is a wheelchair that will help the aged to maneuver around corners with ease without the help of anyone. It also helps them move around their home with a keypad controlled interface, thanks to the innovative system installed along with the new set of wheels making it omni-directional.
Called Permoveh (Personal Mobile Vehicle) and designed by Komori Masaharu, this wheelchair is still under development and maybe further additions will be made before a model can be made available to public. For now the researcher has not announced any plans about making Permoveh available commercially, but there sure are many who could do with a wheelchair that offers them a sense of independence along with comfort. We will keep an eye out for more news from Kyoto University which might as well give an idea of future plans regarding Permoveh.
