The concept of a Digital Gaming Table has been around for a while, but its execution has not really taken off the way you would have liked. While we will not really ponder on the logistic problems what could be done to overcome them, technology like Microsoft's Surface seems to be perfect for this. Sure, it needs a few tweaks, but that should not be a problem at all. That apart, we get to our homemade Digital Gaming Table project and how one guy decided to make it from stuff lying around his home.
This gaming enthusiast (we really do not know his name, but he likes to call himself 'RobotGuy') decided to turn his projector and an old white IKEA table into a Digital Gaming Board. For this all he needed was a mirror and he just glued it to an old lamp with a spring clamp and arranged it at the perfect angle so that the image would be projected on to the white table surface. This gave him the start with the Digital Gamin g Table he wanted.
Of course, there is the next and more important step of interactivity and that is where he is still stuck. For the moment the best option forward would be to use an infra-red webcam that will capture the movements and translate them into digital gaming fun. Another option is to use a webcam on the other side of a translucent surface to read the movements. But for that he needs to get rid of the IKEA table. Either way we will be keeping an eye on how he heads forward and adds interactivity to his Gaming Table. So, have you ever tried making one yourself?
